Málaga Advances as a Hub of Financial Innovation: Keys to Building a Future-Forward FinTech Ecosystem

May 9, 2025

Málaga continues to consolidate its position as a key hub for technological and financial development in Southern Europe. This was evident at the meeting organized by EL ESPAÑOL de Málaga at Cervezas Victoria, which brought together experts from the financial, business, and academic fields with a common goal: to reflect on the present and future of the city’s FinTech ecosystem.

One of the clearest messages of the day was that Málaga already has all the necessary ingredients to become an international leader, but one fundamental element is still missing: a common and sustainable roadmap. This was expressed by Jesús Molina Gómez, director of the FinTech Chair at the University of Málaga, who emphasized:

“Málaga has all the ingredients; the only thing missing is a plan. We are approached every day by companies interested in collaborating. We are not fully aware of the potential we have here.”

Participating in the debate were Israel Rodríguez Ponce, Director of Innovation at Unicaja, and Paula González, Vice President of Banking and Expansion at Ebury. Both emphasized the need to strengthen collaboration between universities, the private sector, and public institutions to attract investment, develop talent, and build an environment that facilitates local innovation with a global impact.

At the Fundación Kareema, we fully share this vision. Through our participation in the UMA FinTech Chair, we support initiatives that combine specialized training, connection with the business community, and the development of young talent. We are convinced that the future of Málaga—and many other cities—lies in building collaborative ecosystems where technology, finance, and sustainability go hand in hand.

These types of meetings are essential for aligning objectives, identifying challenges, and generating real momentum. Because simply having talent and resources is not enough: it is essential to create spaces for meeting, strategic dialogue, and a shared vision.
We celebrate the commitment of all participants, and especially the efforts of the FinTech Chair in channeling these synergies for regional development.
